Jeff and Janna Veenstra
We began to farm out of a desire to produce delicious, local, sustainable vegetables for the Winnipeg area.
We grow over 100 varieties of vegetables, herbs and fruits on our small 20 acre farm just 2 miles south of Bird's Hill Provincial Park.
We do not use any conventional pesticides, herbicides, or fungicides and continue to integrate sustainable practices to produce deliciously fresh, high quality vegetables without compromising the integrity of the environment. We are passionate about improving the health of our soil through the use compost, and crop rotation including summer fallowing. All of our seeds are untreated, and non - GMO. We use biodegradable mulch, flame-weeding, a lot of hoe/hand weeding, cover cropping, summer fallow and cultivation to keep weeds under control.
Jeff has loved farming ever since he was a kid growing up on a 100 acre carrot farm in southern Alberta. He also holds a B.Sc degree in Environmental Studies. Janna grew up here in Manitoba on a dairy farm just a few miles from our current farm. She holds B.Sc degrees in Biology and Nursing and also works part-time as a labour and delivery RN.
Our interest in pesticide free market gardening and the CSA model began while visiting a family friend's farm in Halifax. When we moved back here to Winnipeg the opportunity to start our own farm presented itself and thanks to the support of our valued customers and our amazing crew it has continued to grow into what it is today.
We host a Community Supported Agriculture program with various pickup locations throughout Winnipeg as well as supply multiple restaurants and grocery stores.
